Ruud van Nistelrooy Receives Manchester United Support After Leicester City Exit

Ruud van Nistelrooy has received support from Manchester United figures following his departure from Leicester City.

The former United striker, who briefly served as assistant and interim manager at Old Trafford last season, took over at Leicester after a short spell in charge of the Red Devils.

Van Nistelrooy stepped in following Erik ten Hag’s sacking in October, overseeing four unbeaten matches that included wins over Leicester themselves, PAOK, and a draw with Chelsea.

Despite that run, the United job ultimately went to Ruben Amorim, who was appointed permanent manager in November.

Van Nistelrooy soon left the club following Amorim’s arrival, but it wasn’t long before he returned to management — this time at relegation-threatened Leicester.

Hopes were high that the Dutchman could steer the Foxes to Premier League safety, especially given his promising, albeit brief, tenure at United. However, results failed to improve, and Leicester were relegated, finishing 18th in the table — 13 points adrift of safety.

His exit from the King Power Stadium was confirmed on Friday. In a farewell message on Instagram, the 48-year-old expressed gratitude to everyone at the club:

> “I would like to personally thank the @lcfc players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the club well for the future.”

Van Nistelrooy’s post was met with support from familiar faces at Manchester United, including former teammate Rio Ferdinand and current defender Lisandro Martinez, who both liked the message.

Leicester City released an official statement confirming the mutual agreement to part ways with Van Nistelrooy:

> “Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud’s contract with the Club as First Team Manager will terminate with immediate effect.

From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the Club’s Academy into our First Team environment.

> “Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the Football Club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future.”
