Tottenham Hotspur returned from the international break in style, securing a commanding 3-0 victory over West Ham United on Saturday evening.

The win came as a much-needed response after Spurs suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth before the break, which ended their unbeaten run in the Premier League this season.

Heading to the London Stadium, Spurs hadn’t won away at West Ham since 2019, when a Jose Mourinho-led side edged out the Hammers 3-2.

Thomas Frank made some notable changes to the lineup, bringing in Mathys Tel and Lucas Bergvall, possibly with one eye on their upcoming Champions League opener against Villarreal.

Spurs Assert Dominance Despite Early Controversy

Tottenham started brightly and thought they had taken the lead 20 minutes in when Cristian Romero headed in from a Mohammed Kudus corner. However, referee Jarred Gillett immediately ruled it out, citing a push by Micky van de Ven on Kyle Walker-Peters. VAR did not overturn the decision, leaving Spurs frustrated.

Nevertheless, Tottenham’s dominance eventually paid off in the second half, with goals from Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, and van de Ven securing a comfortable win.

Manager Thomas Frank praised his team’s performance, particularly highlighting their work on set pieces — an area he said has significantly improved since he took over from Ange Postecoglou.

“It was a deserved win,” Frank told Sky Sports. “The first 20 minutes were fairly even, with West Ham creating a few moments, but after that, we took control. I was pleased with how we carried that into the second half. The goals were excellent — especially the second.”

He continued, “Set pieces are a big focus for us now. It’s an area we’ve targeted, and today it really paid off. We were brave, aggressive, and showed a strong desire to control the game — that’s the foundation for winning football matches.”

Bergvall Makes His Mark

Lucas Bergvall, starting in place of Rodrigo Bentancur — who had only just returned from a taxing international trip with Uruguay — seized his opportunity with an impressive display.

The young midfielder capped his performance with a well-taken header, marking his first Premier League goal and doubling Spurs’ lead.

Tottenham’s squad depth has been questioned in recent seasons, but Frank’s ability to rotate players like Bergvall into the starting XI without sacrificing quality could prove vital. The move suggests Spurs are now better equipped to manage player workloads than during the demanding Postecoglou era.
