Kevin Thelwell Wastes No Time as Rangers Back Russell Martin in Transfer Market

Rangers have begun making moves in the summer transfer window, with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and the club’s hierarchy showing early intent to back manager Russell Martin.

The Light Blues recently confirmed the signing of Lyall Cameron from Dundee, following a pre-contract agreement with the midfielder.

And in a further show of ambition, Bournemouth defender Max Aarons has joined the Glasgow side on a season-long loan. The deal, overseen by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, signals the club’s aim to build a stronger, more competitive squad.

However, one name that won’t be joining Cameron at Ibrox is Josh Mulligan. Despite being linked with a move to Rangers, the 22-year-old midfielder has surprisingly signed for Hibernian — a move confirmed by the Edinburgh club that has caught many off guard.

Journalist Questions Rangers’ Mulligan Snub

Scott McDermott of The Daily Record expressed his surprise that Rangers chose not to reunite Mulligan with his former Dundee teammate. He noted that Mulligan’s physical attributes and energy could have been valuable assets in Martin’s midfield.

“Mulligan brings power and drive, something Rangers could use in the middle of the park,” McDermott wrote on 28 June. “Fair play to Hibs — he could prove to be a fantastic addition for David Gray.”

In the Scottish Premiership last season, Mulligan made 34 appearances, registering five assists over 2,664 minutes of action.

Rangers Prioritising Other Areas

Despite McDermott’s comments, it’s clear Rangers had their reasons for passing on Mulligan. With Max Aarons now providing competition for James Tavernier at right-back, and midfielders like Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, and Connor Barron already in place, Mulligan may have struggled for minutes at Ibrox.

Looking ahead, Russell Martin is expected to push for more reinforcements, particularly in defence. The club is reportedly targeting Conor Coady, while Leon Balogun’s departure and a possible return to FC Twente for Robin Propper leave gaps to fill at the back.

Injuries to Dujon Sterling and Ridvan Yilmaz have also raised concerns over full-back reliability, and new arrival Clinton Nsiala remains an unknown quantity under the current management.

There’s also uncertainty surrounding goalkeeper Jack Butland’s future, making it another situation to monitor as the summer progresses.
