Ipswich Town star Omari Hutchinson played a pivotal role in helping England Under-21s retain their European Championship title with a dramatic 3-2 win over Germany in the final held in Slovakia.
The Young Lions battled their way to victory after extra time at the National Football Stadium in Bratislava, with Hutchinson scoring his first goal of the tournament—also his third overall at U21 level—in what was the first trophy of his professional career.
Starting once again on the left wing, where he’s been ever-present throughout the competition, Hutchinson was one of England’s standout performers.
Harvey Elliott opened the scoring within the first five minutes, before Hutchinson doubled the lead about 20 minutes later. After Manchester City’s James McAtee held the ball up expertly, the Ipswich winger drifted into space and rifled a low shot into the net.
Germany responded just before half-time as Nelson Weiper powered in a header to make it 2-1, and the comeback was complete just after the hour mark with a stunning strike from Paul Nebel. Germany nearly stole it in stoppage time, hitting the crossbar, but it was England who landed the final blow.
Just 90 seconds into extra time, Marseille’s Jon Rowe glanced in a decisive header to make it 3-2. Despite late pressure—including another German effort that rattled the woodwork—Lee Carsley’s side held on to secure back-to-back U21 European titles.
Hutchinson’s achievement sees him become only the third Ipswich Town player to win this competition, following in the footsteps of Steve McCall (1982) and Mich D’Avray (1984). Remarkably, this was his first international tournament at any level, with senior England manager Thomas Tuchel watching on from the stands.
Elsewhere, fellow Ipswich teammate Jaden Philogene missed out on the tournament due to an MCL injury, while striker Liam Delap—who bagged 12 goals for Town in the Premier League last season before a £30 million switch—featured instead for Chelsea in their Club World Cup campaign.
Hutchinson will now enjoy a well-earned break, before linking back up with Kieran McKenna’s squad later this summer as Ipswich prepare for the new season.
