Everton Crash Out of Carabao Cup Despite Bright Showing from James Garner

Everton’s 2-0 loss to Wolves on Tuesday marked a disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup in the third round. Despite entering the tie as favourites, the Toffees failed to deliver at Molineux, with few players standing out on the night.

Several Everton players underperformed, including Dwight McNeil, whose display left fans frustrated. However, James Garner was a rare bright spot in an otherwise lacklustre performance.

Garner, who has enjoyed a strong start to the season, continued to impress. The midfielder has become a regular fixture in the starting lineup and has consistently delivered solid performances.

Following the defeat to Liverpool, Garner was one of the few players to retain his place in the starting XI against Wolves — and he didn’t disappoint.

One of his standout moments came in the second half as Everton pushed for an equaliser. Stepping up for a free-kick, Garner struck a powerful shot that rattled the crossbar, leaving Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone helpless.

Speaking on Sky Sports on September 23, pundit David Edwards praised the effort:
“This just looked like it was destined for the top corner. Sam Johnstone was rooted. Fabulous hit — so much pace and dip on it. Crashes against the woodwork. A fantastic attempt from Garner.”

Garner’s versatility has been key for Everton this season, with the 22-year-old even filling in at full-back when needed. He has featured in every match so far, showcasing both consistency and adaptability.

His strong form hasn’t gone unnoticed, with growing calls for an England call-up. If he maintains this level throughout the season, Garner could well earn a spot in the Three Lions squad for the 2026 World Cup.

With continued development and performances like these, he may play a pivotal role in helping England chase long-awaited international glory.
