Antony levels late as Real Betis hold Nottingham Forest to Europa League draw
Antony netted a late equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw for Real Betis against Nottingham Forest in their UEFA Europa League 2025/26 League Phase Matchday 1 clash at La Cartuja in Seville.
The Brazilian scored Betis’ second goal in the 85th minute, cancelling out a brace from Forest’s Igor Jesus.
Nottingham Forest head coach Ange Postecoglou was left frustrated by missed chances as his side had to settle for a point on their return to European competition after more than 30 years away.
Forest fell behind early, conceding in the 13th minute, but responded strongly. Igor Jesus struck twice to turn the game around, and Forest looked on course for a memorable win after producing some impressive football, particularly in the first half.
But with just five minutes left, Antony’s finish ensured the Spanish side salvaged a point.
Despite the result, Postecoglou was encouraged by much of what he saw from his team.
“I can’t fault the players’ effort and endeavour. Our football was outstanding at times, especially in the first half,” he said.
The Australian manager pointed to a lack of composure in front of goal as a key reason for not taking all three points.
“We were just missing that clinical edge in the front third. We created a number of good chances through quality build-up play — not many teams will come here and do that.
“In the second half, we dropped off a little. I never felt we were under real threat, but we were careless with the ball. We had openings to kill the game, but didn’t show the calmness or composure needed.
“When the margin’s just one goal and the opposition have players who can make the difference, it only takes a moment. That’s what happened and we’ve paid for it.”
Postecoglou emphasised the importance of maintaining belief despite not getting the result the performance arguably deserved.
“The players can’t let their heads drop just because we haven’t got the wins yet. I’m disappointed for them — they deserved to be rewarded for their play tonight.
“The conditions were tough, with the humidity and the pitch, but some of our football was exceptional.
“This group has been really open to what we’re trying to implement. We’re just missing that final touch to put games to bed.”
Despite the draw, it was a proud night for Forest, marking their return to European competition after a long absence. The travelling fans made the most of the occasion in Seville, and Postecoglou praised their support.
“It’s been fantastic,” he said. “There’s now a whole generation of Forest fans who’ll have their own European stories to tell.
“I would have loved to give them a win tonight, but I’m sure they’re proud of what the team showed. If we keep playing like that, we’ll give ourselves a real shot at progressing.”
