Robin Roefs Shines as Sunderland Defy Expectations in Premier League Return

Sunderland have made an impressive start to the 2025–26 Premier League season, with one player in particular catching the attention of club legend Kevin Phillips.

Despite the fact that no newly promoted side has managed to avoid relegation in the past two seasons, the Black Cats are showing early signs they could break that trend.

Six matches into the campaign, Sunderland sit fifth in the table, having lost just once — a better start than most predicted.

While their success has been a collective effort, one standout performer has emerged in Phillips’ eyes: goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Phillips praised Roefs for his outstanding form, especially after another clean sheet last weekend.

“The goalkeeper. Wow. He’s been awesome. Absolutely awesome,” said Phillips. “Sure, you could maybe question the goal against Villa — it came through a crowd of players — but that’s nitpicking. I think he’s been outstanding.”

Sunderland’s defence has played a major role in their strong start. Only Arsenal and Crystal Palace have conceded fewer goals, with Roefs keeping three clean sheets so far.

Even though he faced some criticism for his error in the match against Aston Villa, the 22-year-old Dutchman has responded with confidence, determined to silence any doubters.

Phillips isn’t alone in his praise. Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney described Roefs as “exquisite” following Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Roefs Heroics vs. Forest Earn Widespread Praise

Roefs was instrumental in Sunderland’s narrow victory over Nottingham Forest, a performance that has earned him widespread acclaim.

In a match where Forest registered 22 shots, Roefs stood tall, making key saves to preserve the clean sheet and secure all three points.

His display highlighted just how crucial a top-level goalkeeper can be, justifying manager Regis Le Bris’ decision to sign him for £9 million during the summer transfer window.

As Sunderland continue to defy the odds in their Premier League return, Robin Roefs is quickly establishing himself as one of the breakout stars of the season.
