Newcastle United Look to Build on Champions League Momentum Against Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United will aim to carry the confidence from their emphatic Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise into Sunday’s Premier League encounter with Nottingham Forest.

Despite a rocky start to their league campaign—managing just one win so far, which came against bottom-placed Wolves—there’s no reason for alarm at St James’ Park. The team has shown flashes of strong performances, and their 4-0 triumph in midweek suggested things may finally be clicking for Eddie Howe’s side.

That dominant display in Europe could be the turning point Newcastle have been waiting for, and Sunday presents an ideal opportunity to build momentum. They face a struggling Forest side currently embroiled in early-season difficulties.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Newcastle to come out on top this weekend, predicting a 2-1 victory for the Magpies during Sky Sports’ Super Six segment.

“Both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest are in the bottom six heading into the weekend, but Newcastle should have enough quality to get the win at St James’ Park,” Carragher noted.

Three points could potentially lift Newcastle into the top half of the table, as they begin the weekend in 15th with just six points from their opening fixtures.

In contrast, Nottingham Forest are facing a tough period, sitting 17th in the table. New manager Ange Postecoglou is already under pressure, despite only taking over in early September following Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure.

Postecoglou is still seeking his first win, and frustration among the fanbase is growing after a sixth consecutive game without a victory. The pressure intensified further on Thursday night, when Forest suffered a 3-2 home defeat to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.

The atmosphere turned hostile at the City Ground, with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” directed at the Australian manager.

As Forest prepare to travel to Tyneside, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Postecoglou. A defeat to Newcastle could significantly worsen his standing and further unsettle a fanbase already calling for change.
