Manchester United were ahead 2-0 against Sunderland when Benjamin Sesko was initially penalized for a foul on Trai Hume. However, the decision was overturned after a VAR review.
The PGMOL has clarified why Sunderland’s penalty against Manchester United was rescinded following the VAR check. During first-half injury time, with United leading 2-0, Sesko was first judged to have fouled Hume.
The on-field call was unclear, prompting referee Stuart Attwell to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After watching several replays, Attwell determined that Sesko had not committed a foul and instead awarded a corner kick.
The Premier League’s Match Centre account on X explained: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original penalty decision for Sunderland. The referee announced: ‘After review, there is no foul by the Manchester United player.
He does not make contact with the head of the attacker. As the ball was out of play when the decision was made, the final call is a corner kick.’”
This ruling was a relief for Sesko, who had scored his first goal at Old Trafford to increase United’s lead in the 31st minute. The forward finished a precise first-time strike after Diogo Dalot’s long throw-in was flicked into his path.
The 22-year-old had opened his United goal account just last Saturday in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford. Mason Mount, another player yet to score at Old Trafford in the Premier League, had put United ahead against Sunderland early on.
Just eight minutes into the match, the English midfielder controlled a superb pass from Bryan Mbeumo and curled a shot past goalkeeper Robin Roefs into the bottom right corner.
