Rangers Managerial Search Heats Up as Van Bommel Shows Interest

The hunt for Rangers’ next manager has become a major talking point, with speculation growing across fan circles and the media.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the situation, while former Bayern Munich and Barcelona midfielder Mark van Bommel has expressed interest in the role.

The managerial vacancy opened after Russell Martin was dismissed on Sunday night following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Falkirk.

Martin had a poor start to the season, with just one win in seven games, and underwhelming performances in European competition, leaving the club in a difficult position in the Europa League.

Focus has now shifted to finding Martin’s replacement. Romano stated via Give Me Sport that Rangers have begun identifying potential candidates, but no final decision has been made. He said:

“Now the club is looking for a replacement. As of this morning, no decision yet. As soon as [it’s] decided, we’ll update!”

Early names in the mix include Sean Dyche, Steven Gerrard, and Danny Röhl.

One intriguing option is Mark van Bommel, the Dutch football legend who enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning major trophies with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, and PSV.

As a coach, he has managed PSV, Wolfsburg, and most recently Royal Antwerp, where he won a league and cup double in 2023.

Van Bommel has been out of management for over a year and has never coached or played in the UK — making him a less conventional option compared to others linked with the role.

Football journalist Ben Jacobs revealed:

“Understand Mark van Bommel would be interested in the vacant Rangers job. He’s been available since leaving Royal Antwerp where he won the Belgian Pro League in 2022/23.

Van Bommel was one of the names approached over the summer when Russell Martin got the job. Rangers are currently shortlisting candidates with several names being discussed.”

Speaking to talkSPORT about past links with Rangers, Van Bommel said:

“There were some talks, but not directly with the board of Glasgow Rangers. With many Dutch players there and, of course, [former manager Dick] Advocaat… I played there once with PSV. The atmosphere is unbelievable.”

He added:

“I loved my time at Antwerp — it’s similar to Rangers. The Scottish league is strong, and the challenge of winning the title and playing in Europe is huge. That’s the big goal for Scottish clubs.”
