Could Liverpool Turn to Marc Guehi’s Palace Teammate After Failed Transfer Bid?
After seeing their deadline-day pursuit of Marc Guehi fall through due to Crystal Palace’s reluctance to sell, Liverpool may be forced to explore alternative options at Selhurst Park — including another key member of Oliver Glasner’s backline.
Glasner’s Palace side have had Liverpool’s number recently, remaining unbeaten in three consecutive matches since May, including victories in both the Community Shield and a Premier League fixture in south London.
Despite parting ways with star talents like Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in recent seasons, the Eagles have continued to impress on the pitch. That success has naturally put several of their current players on the radar of bigger clubs with deeper pockets.
Maxence Lacroix Emerges as a Potential Target
Former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown — still a well-connected figure in football — has suggested that while Liverpool remain focused on a future move for Guehi, his centre-back partner Maxence Lacroix could also become a serious option.
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said:
> “Lacroix is definitely someone Liverpool will be looking at — he’s been outstanding for Palace. Every top club is monitoring him, especially with quality centre-backs being in such short supply.
“Guehi is still Liverpool’s priority. Yes, they missed out on him this summer, but he’s their ideal target and one they’ll push hard for again.
“That said, if another club steps in and gets Guehi first, Liverpool may consider turning to Lacroix. But Palace losing both defenders? That would be a stretch, and it certainly wouldn’t be an easy deal.”
Plan B: Could Lacroix Be the Answer?
With Bayern Munich also reportedly interested in Guehi, Liverpool may need a backup plan. Lacroix, while not the standout name in Palace’s recent FA Cup-winning side, has quietly built a strong reputation with consistent performances.
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has praised the 25-year-old’s “commanding presence” at the heart of the defence, and statistical comparisons (via FBref) suggest Lacroix stacks up well against both Guehi and Liverpool’s current centre-back options in several key defensive metrics.
Aged the same as Guehi and with experience in both the Bundesliga and Premier League, Lacroix ticks many of the boxes Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes would be looking for.
Guehi may still be Liverpool’s top target for 2026, but if the pursuit falls short again, Maxence Lacroix could prove to be a very viable — and perhaps necessary — alternative.
