Steven Gerrard Breaks Silence After Turning Down Rangers Job as He Congratulates Ross Wilson on Newcastle Move

Steven Gerrard has spoken publicly for the first time since rejecting the chance to return to Rangers — taking to social media to congratulate his former Ibrox colleague Ross Wilson on landing a senior role at Newcastle United.

The Liverpool legend had emerged as the preferred candidate of Andrew Cavenagh and his recruitment team to replace Russell Martin at Ibrox. However, after two days of talks in London, Gerrard decided that the timing wasn’t right for a second spell in Glasgow.

With Gerrard opting out, Rangers have gone back to the drawing board, with names such as Danny Röhl, Slaven Bilić and Raphael Wicky reportedly under serious consideration for the vacancy.

Gerrard, meanwhile, has returned to his family base in Bahrain to continue his break from management.

Gerrard Sends Message to Former Colleague

During his first stint at Rangers, Gerrard worked closely with then-sporting director Ross Wilson, who went on to rebuild his career in England after leaving Ibrox.

Wilson joined Nottingham Forest in a similar role and enjoyed notable success, which has now earned him a major career step — becoming Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

Wilson’s appointment was confirmed on Saturday, prompting Gerrard to share a supportive message on Instagram. The former Rangers boss wrote:

“Congratulations @ross_wilson7. Great club for you, best of luck mate.”

Wilson’s Next Chapter at Newcastle

Wilson’s move to St. James’ Park represents a significant milestone in his career. Though his tenure at Rangers divided opinion among supporters, he has restored his reputation south of the border and now joins a Newcastle setup with major ambitions under its current ownership.

Speaking after his unveiling, Wilson said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be here at Newcastle United. This is such a special club, and I fully understand the passion, ambition and expectations of our incredible supporters, as well as the ownership’s desire to keep building an even stronger Newcastle United.

My conversations with the ownership group have been extremely positive, and I’ve also been in regular contact with Eddie Howe and David Hopkinson.

The trust and alignment we’re developing already feels strong, and being united as a team will be vital as we continue moving the club forward.

There’s already excellent work being done here, and my goal is to build on that — from the first team to the women’s side and the academy — strengthening our structures and creating environments where players and staff can thrive.”
