Sunderland Extend Unbeaten Home Run as Mukiele Shines Against Wolves
Sunderland’s impressive home form continued this weekend, as they maintained their unbeaten Premier League record at the Stadium of Light with a 2–0 victory over struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers. The result further solidified the ground’s status as a fortress, while deepening Wolves’ woes at the foot of the table.
Although the visitors carved out a few half-chances—particularly in an open second half—it was Regis Le Bris’ side who once again made home advantage count, sealing a third league win on Wearside this season.
The day belonged to new signing Nordi Mukiele, who capped off a standout display by scoring his first goal for the Black Cats. The energetic full-back’s tireless running was rewarded when he forced the opener, setting Sunderland on course for another comfortable victory.
Mukiele Impresses in New Role
Before Saturday’s clash, Mukiele had been deployed solely as a centre-back for his new club. However, Le Bris opted for a tactical tweak against Vítor Pereira’s team, shifting the Frenchman to right-back—a move that proved inspired.
The former RB Leipzig defender’s willingness to push forward paid off midway through the contest when he capitalized on a loose ball that Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone failed to deal with, putting Sunderland in control.
Mukiele’s contribution wasn’t limited to attacking play; he was equally impressive defensively, winning a dominant 15 duels throughout the match. Analyst Statman Dave even described the 27-year-old as “monstrous” after the final whistle.
With Daniel Ballard also excelling at centre-half, Mukiele may have earned himself more opportunities in this new role going forward.
Underperformers Emerge Despite Victory
Not every selection decision from Le Bris went to plan, however. While Sunderland ultimately sealed the win courtesy of a late Wolves own goal, some attacking players struggled to make an impact.
Wilson Isidor, aiming to add to his three league goals this term, saw one effort ruled out for offside and otherwise failed to trouble the goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Chris Rigg endured a quiet afternoon, managing no shots and just 22 touches, raising doubts about his place in the starting XI.
The biggest disappointment, though, may have been Bertrand Traoré. Making his first Premier League start for Sunderland, the Burkina Faso international lasted only 63 minutes before being substituted. Despite completing two dribbles and finding promising positions, he failed to register a single shot and managed just 23 touches—fewer than goalkeeper Robin Roefs, who recorded 42.
Roefs also outperformed the winger in passing accuracy, while Traoré’s struggles in duels only compounded a frustrating outing. To make matters worse, his replacement, Chemsdine Talbi, played a crucial role in Sunderland’s second goal, driving forward to force the Ladislav Krejčí own goal that sealed the result.
