Head coach Sergej Jakirovic believes the Tigers’ recent 1-0 victory over Sheffield United showed clear signs of progress and that the team is on the right track after last season’s struggles.
That belief was strengthened by their dramatic 3-2 triumph away at Birmingham City on Saturday — their first away win of the season and the first time they’ve managed back-to-back victories in over a year.
Heading into the clash with Leicester, City boast three wins, one draw, and one defeat from their opening five home games. Supporters have been re-energized by the team’s performances after last season’s poor home form, which saw Hull manage just five wins in 23 matches.
It wasn’t until Christmas that they earned their second home victory, and the third didn’t arrive until March as they fought to avoid relegation.
Turning the MKM Stadium into a fortress was one of Jakirovic’s main goals upon his arrival in the summer, and early signs are encouraging. The upcoming fixtures — against Leicester on Tuesday and Charlton Athletic on Saturday — will provide further tests of that progress.
Jakirovic highlighted the importance of the hard-fought win over Sheffield United, crediting both the team’s resilience and goalkeeper Ivor Pandur’s crucial late penalty save.
“It was a very important victory for us,” Jakirovic said. “I think we now have that home feeling at the MKM Stadium. This is our house, and it won’t be easy for teams to take points here.
I liked the passion, the power, and the strength we showed. Of course, sometimes you need a bit of luck — and Ivor’s penalty save was fantastic for his confidence and for the team.”
However, the Croatian manager will be absent from the touchline on Tuesday due to a one-match suspension after receiving his third yellow card of the season during the fiery encounter at St Andrew’s.
“I’ll be watching from the tribune, like Luis Enrique at PSG,” he joked. “Marco (Salatovic), Deano (Dean Holden), and the rest of the staff will prepare everything as normal, and we’ll be ready to go.
Leicester are an excellent side, probably one of the top three in the division. We’ll need to be at our best — much better, in fact — but at home, we play with a different energy. That’s something special, and we’ll be ready.”
