Kris Boyd Sends Clear Message to New Rangers Boss Danny Rohl: “He Has to Get Results”
Former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest striker Kris Boyd, known for his outspoken views, hasn’t held back following the appointment of Danny Rohl as Rangers’ new head coach.
After a lengthy and often confusing recruitment process, Rangers have finally confirmed Rohl as their new manager, with Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart leading the search. The club endured multiple setbacks during the hunt, including Rohl initially turning down the role. At various points, Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat appeared to be in contention, only to withdraw due to issues with timing.
Steven Smith oversaw Rangers’ recent 2-2 draw with Dundee United and was expected to be in charge for the upcoming match against SK Brann. However, that game will now mark Rohl’s debut in the dugout. As the German coach prepares to lead the team in Norway, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has issued a blunt message: “He has to get results.”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Boyd criticized the club’s handling of the managerial search and questioned some of the decisions made along the way.
“It’s been a shambles, there’s no denying it,” Boyd said. “Rangers will say they needed to follow a process to land Danny Rohl, but when you look at how quickly Steven Gerrard went from flying in from Bahrain to deciding it wasn’t the right time – I’m not buying that. Something doesn’t add up.”
He continued, “With Kevin Muscat, they were deep in talks and he seemed to be the clear choice. So why didn’t they wait for him? The whole situation has been full of inconsistencies. But regardless, Rohl is now the man in charge, and like I said, he must deliver results.”
“Highly Regarded” – But Glasgow is a Tough Test
Boyd did acknowledge Rohl’s credentials, describing him as a respected coach with strong experience.
“It’s been a long process, but Rangers always seemed to have Rohl on their radar. They spoke to him in the summer but chose Russell Martin instead. That clearly didn’t work out, and now they’ve turned back to Rohl,” Boyd explained.
“He’s proven himself at Sheffield Wednesday and with the German national team under Hansi Flick. He’s highly regarded in coaching circles. But so was Russell Martin – and Glasgow is a completely different challenge.”
Boyd concluded by emphasizing the scale of the task facing the new head coach.
“Rangers have only won one league game all season – and that was a last-minute scrappy win against Livingston. This is a squad that’s massively under-performing. It’s now up to Rohl to turn things around and get the best out of these players.”
