Röhl Apologises to Travelling Rangers Fans After Brann Humiliation

Danny Röhl’s first match as Rangers manager ended in disaster as his side slumped to a 3–0 defeat against Brann in Bergen — prompting the German coach to jump the advertising hoardings and apologise personally to the travelling supporters.

The 36-year-old’s debut could hardly have gone worse, as Rangers produced another lacklustre European performance, leaving their Europa League hopes hanging by a thread. Goals from Emil Kornvig, Jacob Sørensen and Noah Holm sealed a historic win for the Norwegian side, while the Ibrox club were outplayed in every department.

The Gers players were jeered off the pitch after the final whistle, but Röhl’s decision to face the fans and apologise earned him a warmer reception, with supporters chanting his name in a show of respect for his honesty.

“They Deserve Better”

Reflecting after the match, Röhl admitted the defeat was a harsh reality check only four days into his tenure.

“Of course I expected more from us,” he said. “At Rangers, we should always have high standards — that’s very important to understand.

“We knew everything wouldn’t be perfect straight away, but we’re still very disappointed with a 3–0 defeat. After the game, I apologised to the fans because they travel a lot and always support the team. They are passionate, they deserve much better.

“It was important for me to show that I understand them. I told them I’m working very hard to improve this group and to get results. It makes me sad that I couldn’t give them a good feeling tonight, but that’s why I went to them — to show respect. They’ve been patient, but performances like this aren’t acceptable.”

Röhl acknowledged that Brann were the better side throughout, saying the game highlighted “where we are right now — the reality.” He added that Rangers need to show immediate progress when they return to league action against Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Sunday.

“We’re Playing as Individuals, Not a Team”

The new manager admitted that defensive mistakes and a lack of cohesion in attack continue to plague his side but insisted there is still quality within the squad.

“I see potential here,” Röhl said. “My job is to develop and improve the players — individually and collectively. The goals we conceded were too easy. Mistakes happen, but we must help each other.

“Right now we’re playing as individuals instead of as a group. Brann don’t have the best individual players, but they work together — and that made the difference.

“It’s going to be hard to qualify now, but we can’t think long-term. We play every three days, and we have to win the next one.”

A Harsh Introduction

Röhl admitted the defeat underlined just how big the task ahead is but insisted he’s not daunted by the challenge.

“There are reasons why Rangers haven’t been winning recently — and we saw them again tonight,” he said. “My job is to find solutions as quickly as possible.

“Of course, we wanted a good start, but football doesn’t work by wishful thinking. You have to work, and improvement won’t come overnight. Every minute now has to be used to make sure this kind of performance doesn’t happen again.”

For Röhl, it was the worst possible start to life in the Ibrox dugout — but by fronting up to the fans, he’s already shown a willingness to face Rangers’ problems head-on.
