Chelsea face Sunderland in the Premier League tomorrow afternoon — and it promises to be far from straightforward.
Despite being newly promoted, the Black Cats have been one of the standout surprises of the season.
They currently sit level on points with Chelsea and have impressed with some smart summer signings and big results against top sides. Chelsea will need to be alert to avoid an upset.
Sunderland’s confidence is high after a convincing 2–0 win over Wolves last time out. Ahead of the clash, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca shared his thoughts on the opposition in his pre-match press conference.
“Since the season began, Sunderland have shown they’re a very good team. They play together, they work hard, and they’re well-organised,” Maresca said.
“They’re level on points with us, which shows how consistent they’ve been. In the Premier League, there are no easy games — every match is a challenge.”
Chelsea approach the match in one of their best fitness situations in weeks. With the exception of Malo Gusto, who remains suspended, Maresca has a full-strength squad to choose from. There will be no room for excuses.

The manager also addressed issues surrounding his strikers. Marc Guiu was recently left out of the lineup due to poor training habits — something Maresca openly discussed — but he confirmed that the matter has now been resolved.
Meanwhile, there was encouraging news on Liam Delap, who is making a rapid recovery from a hamstring injury. Maresca hinted that the young forward could return to action as early as next week.
Unfortunately for Guiu, just as his opportunity seemed to arrive, Delap’s comeback could see him slip back down the pecking order.
