Charlton Boss Nathan Jones Responds to Ashley Young’s “Cup Final” Comments After Ipswich Win

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has fired back at Ipswich Town full-back Ashley Young, following the veteran defender’s claim that the Addicks celebrated “like they’d won their cup final” after last Tuesday’s 3-0 triumph at Portman Road.

Speaking after Charlton’s 1-1 draw away at Hull City on Saturday, Jones addressed Young’s post-match remarks, insisting his side’s celebrations were nothing out of the ordinary.

“Ashley Young is an experienced player who’s had a fantastic career,” Jones told BBC Sport London. “I’m sure when he’s had big results against teams like Manchester City, he’s been delighted too.

“We didn’t over-celebrate. We celebrated with our fans — that’s what we do. We didn’t do a lap of honour, we didn’t do the conga, and we certainly didn’t do a Mexican wave around Portman Road.”

Jones stressed the importance of context, highlighting the significance of the result for his newly promoted side.

“It was a huge win for us,” he continued. “They’ve come down from the Premier League, and we’ve come up from League One. You have to put that into perspective.”

Despite the exchange, Jones was keen to emphasise his respect for the 39-year-old former Manchester United star.

“I’ve got massive respect for Ashley — he’s a wonderful player,” he said. “But let’s be honest, our budget is probably a tenth of theirs. If you multiplied their spending power by ten, you’d be talking about £300–400 million — that’s Champions League-winning territory. They’d be competing with the likes of Juventus or Bayern Munich.”

Jones concluded by offering a polite yet pointed response to Young’s criticism.

“If he thought we over-celebrated, then I apologise,” he said. “But we didn’t. We just enjoyed beating probably the best team in the league.”
