Rangers’ Chaotic Start to the 2025–26 Season
Rangers have endured a nightmare opening to the 2025–26 campaign.
Russell Martin was dismissed after just 123 days in charge, leaving with the worst record of any Rangers manager in the club’s history.
Danny Röhl has since taken over, and although fans are cautiously optimistic about the future, it doesn’t erase the fact that the season so far has been a major failure for the club.
Currently sitting fifth in the Scottish Premiership and bottom of their Europa League group, Rangers have been widely criticised — with Neil Warnock among those describing the season as a complete shambles.
Kevin Thelwell Under Fire for Rangers’ Failures
Sporting director Kevin Thelwell’s tenure at Ibrox has started in disastrous fashion. Most of the summer signings have underperformed, and the atmosphere around the club has turned toxic, with frustration aimed at both Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart.
Speaking on talkSPORT on October 28, Warnock was scathing about the club’s recruitment, saying:
“Rangers’ recruitment has been a disgrace. Some of those players wouldn’t even get into my Torquay side.”
Thelwell took a huge risk by spending £10 million on Youssef Chermiti, despite the Portuguese striker having gone more than two years without a senior goal.
Meanwhile, £4.5 million signing Oscar Cortes was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijón, and £3.5 million defender Emmanuel Fernandez was regularly omitted from matchday squads under Martin. Although Cortes’ transfer was agreed back in June 2024, the decision to loan him out came directly from Thelwell.
So far, the recruitment policy has been a complete failure, with only Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma showing any real promise. Supporters have confronted Thelwell several times this season, and chairman Andrew Cavenagh will now need to evaluate his position at the club.
Fans Justified in Wanting Thelwell Out
Supporters’ frustration is entirely understandable. Thelwell has made a series of poor decisions yet appears to have escaped any real accountability. After overseeing what many view as Rangers’ worst transfer window in years, he wasn’t disciplined — and even appointed his own son as the new head of recruitment.
Alongside other hires such as Jim Liggett and Nathan Fisher, these moves have only reinforced concerns that Thelwell is continuing to make key decisions without the results to justify them.
Whether Röhl can turn Rangers’ season around remains to be seen. But even if performances improve, there’s no reason for Thelwell to receive any credit for the turnaround.
If results continue to stagnate, Cavenagh must act decisively and relieve Kevin Thelwell of his duties before further damage is done.
