Rangers’ Trophy Hopes End as Celtic Triumph in Hampden Semi-Final

Glasgow Rangers’ hopes of lifting silverware in 2025 are officially over after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Celtic in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Manager Danny Rohl, who had enjoyed back-to-back victories in the Scottish Premiership heading into the clash, was unable to inspire his side to a third consecutive win.

Despite being reduced to ten men, the Light Blues forced extra time — but two late Celtic goals sealed their fate and ended their cup journey.

Jack Butland Not to Blame for Defeat

While some fans and neutrals may be quick to criticise Jack Butland for failing to stop Callum McGregor’s strike that put Celtic 2-1 ahead, the goalkeeper was far from the reason behind Rangers’ downfall.

The effort appeared to slip through the former England international’s hands down the middle of the goal, but aside from that moment, Butland was arguably one of Rangers’ standout performers.

Premier Sports TV pundit and former Celtic boss Neil Lennon even labelled his display as “tremendous.” His fingertip save to deny Callum Osmand’s powerful header was a highlight, and he produced several vital stops during regular time to keep his side in contention.

Jayden Meghoma Under Scrutiny

If anyone shoulders more responsibility, it’s young left-back Jayden Meghoma. The Brentford loanee struggled throughout and could now find his place in the starting lineup under serious threat.

Meghoma was at fault for the opening goal, allowing Johnny Kenny to escape his marking from a corner. Premier Sports pundit Michael Stewart observed during commentary that the defender “never recognises the danger” — a recurring problem that has haunted him since his first appearance under Rohl.

The 19-year-old showed similar lapses against Brann, when he allowed Jacob Lungi Sørensen a free header — prompting Ally McCoist to describe his defending as “remarkable” and “diabolical.” Against Celtic, those same errors resurfaced, repeatedly exposing Butland and the Rangers back line to unnecessary danger.

Defensive Concerns Mount

Meghoma’s overall stats this season paint a worrying picture. The teenager has registered just one assist while committing two errors that have directly led to shots and losing possession an average of 12.7 times per game.

His defensive awareness, especially at set-pieces, has been questionable, and his limited attacking output offers little to offset those struggles.

With no other natural left-back currently in the squad — a result of summer recruitment led by Kevin Thelwell and Russell Martin — Rohl may have no choice but to demand reinforcements in January.

Unless Meghoma drastically improves over the coming weeks, his time as Rangers’ first-choice left-back could be coming to an end.
