Sunday’s win lifted the Hammers — who had been languishing in 18th place — to within three points of Burnley, offering a glimmer of hope in their fight for survival.
West Ham’s battle against relegation is far from over
Despite the morale-boosting result, Opta’s Supercomputer still gives West Ham a 49.73% chance of relegation, projecting them to finish 19th on an average of 36.16 points.
Their title hopes are mathematically non-existent (0%), while chances of European qualification are similarly slim — just 0.01% for the Champions League and 0.02% for the Europa League. The model also predicts that Burnley will narrowly survive in 17th with 37.51 points, while Forest could join the Hammers in going down.
That said, with just 10 games played, there’s still plenty of time to alter the course of their season. Another win against Burnley next weekend could dramatically improve their survival odds.
What the win revealed about Nuno’s West Ham
Despite having only 37% possession, West Ham’s display proved that dominance isn’t measured solely by control of the ball.
Newcastle failed to register a single big chance, while the Hammers created two and outshot their opponents by three efforts.
Although few expected them to outplay Newcastle, Nuno’s men showed real discipline and threat on the counterattack — a trademark of his tactical style.
If this performance is any indication, Nuno’s system is beginning to take shape, and West Ham’s fight for safety may have just begun in earnest.
