Former Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has also been full of admiration for Xhaka’s performances in the North East. Speaking on talkSPORT, Allardyce suggested the 33-year-old looks even more impressive in red and white than he did during his time at Arsenal.

“He looks top drawer — he always has,” Allardyce said. “But maybe he looks even more outstanding at Sunderland because of the role he’s playing and the players around him.
