Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has reportedly emerged as a strong contender for the Celtic managerial job, with fresh reports suggesting he is “very interested” in taking over at Celtic Park.
The Scottish champions are still searching for a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers, who stepped down unexpectedly last month.
Club legend Martin O’Neill returned to take charge on an interim basis and has since guided the Hoops to consecutive wins — including a memorable League Cup semi-final victory over Rangers.
However, the 73-year-old has made it clear he does not wish to take on the role permanently.
McKenna, 39, was among the first names linked with Celtic after Rodgers’ exit, and according to Football Insider, the Ipswich manager is keen on the opportunity.
The outlet also claims McKenna is growing “increasingly unsettled” at Portman Road, with Ipswich’s inconsistent Championship form leading to doubts within the club’s hierarchy about his long-term future.
Despite being tipped for another promotion push, Ipswich currently sit mid-table, and the club’s sluggish start appears to have raised internal concerns.
This uncertainty, combined with McKenna’s alleged interest in the Celtic vacancy, has only fueled speculation about a potential move north of the border.
Alongside McKenna, Ange Postecoglou and Craig Bellamy have also been mentioned as possible candidates, though Postecoglou’s return is seen as unlikely, and Bellamy has reaffirmed his commitment to his role as Wales manager.
Speaking ahead of Ipswich’s recent trip to QPR, McKenna attempted to downplay the rumours, insisting his full focus remains on his current job:
“It’s not something I’ve given any thought to. I’ve got a really special job here at a massive football club. We’re in an important part of the season with three big games coming up. Anything outside of that hasn’t touched my radar.”
He also confirmed that there has been no contact or approach from Celtic, but reports continue to suggest he could be tempted by the challenge — especially as frustrations reportedly grow behind the scenes at Ipswich.
Should Celtic decide to make a formal approach, the timing remains uncertain. O’Neill could still be offered the role until the end of the season if positive results continue, delaying any move for McKenna.
For Ipswich fans, the latest developments will be worrying. McKenna, a boyhood Celtic supporter, has been instrumental in the Tractor Boys’ resurgence since taking charge nearly four years ago.
But with tensions mounting and the lure of managing one of Britain’s biggest clubs on the table, the Northern Irishman may feel that now is the right moment for a fresh challenge.
