Italian Media Deliver Brutal Verdict on Rangers After Roma Defeat — One Player Escapes Criticism

Rangers’ disappointing Europa League campaign continued on Thursday night as Danny Rohl’s side suffered a 2–0 defeat to AS Roma at Ibrox.

The Italian visitors took full control of the match and could easily have won by a larger margin. Although Rangers improved after the break and showed flashes of intent, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome or ease the growing pressure on their new manager.

Italian Press Deliver Mixed Player Ratings

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport released their player ratings following the game — and they didn’t hold back.

There was some recognition for Mikey Moore, the 19-year-old winger on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, who earned a 6.5/10 rating and was even named “The Best” performer for Rohl’s team. Connor Barron also received a 6.5, but it was Moore’s energy and composure that stood out in an otherwise frustrating night for the hosts.

At the other end of the scale, Nasser Djiga was heavily criticised and handed a 4.5/10, branded “The Worst” by Gazzetta. The report bluntly stated: “He has many problems, including passing the ball to his teammates.”

Corriere dello Sport echoed that sentiment, also naming Djiga Rangers’ poorest performer. Their analysis was equally scathing: “Where he lives, it was Rome rush-hour traffic — he fell asleep on the corner that gave them the lead.”

A Difficult Start for Danny Rohl

The result leaves Rangers in a difficult position both domestically and in Europe. The Ibrox side now sit 14 points behind Hearts in the Scottish Premiership and remain bottom of their Europa League group — a situation that already looks beyond rescue.

Despite the criticism, there were small positives to take — notably the performances of Moore and Barron, who at least showed some fight and quality under pressure.

However, Rohl’s immediate focus now turns to a crucial Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee this weekend — a must-win fixture if the German coach hopes to stabilise his early tenure and lift the mood among the Rangers support.
