“That’s UNACCEPTABLE, he should have been sent off the pitch because…..”- SFA KMI panel say Trusty should have been sent off for foul on Butland

The defender received a yellow card for a foul on Jack Butland after his trailing foot made contact with the goalkeeper late in the first half.

The Scottish Football Association’s Key Match Incident (KMI) panel has ruled that Celtic defender Auston Trusty should have been sent off during the League Cup semi-final win over Rangers.

Trusty was only shown a yellow card for catching Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland with a trailing foot late in the first half — a decision the panel now says was wrong.

Celtic went on to seal a 3-1 victory after extra time, thanks to goals from Johnny Kenny, Callum McGregor, and Callum Osmand, booking their place in next month’s final against St Mirren.

However, the KMI panel revealed that two of its three members believed the referee made a mistake by not issuing a red card and that the VAR team also erred by failing to recommend an on-field review.

Earlier in the match, Rangers were reduced to ten men when Thelo Aasgaard was sent off for a high challenge on Anthony Ralston. The panel confirmed that decision — along with the penalty awarded to Rangers for a handball by Ralston — was correct.

“The majority (2:1) of the panel agreed the on-field decision was incorrect,” the statement read.
“Two members felt VAR should have intervened to recommend a review, and a red card should have been shown.”

The KMI also ruled on another incident from last week’s Premiership clash between St Mirren and Hearts, stating that St Mirren’s disallowed goal should have stood.

During the 2-2 draw in Paisley, Miguel Freckleton’s goal was chalked off for offside after a VAR review — a call the panel unanimously disagreed with.

“The panel unanimously agreed the on-field decision of goal was correct,” they said.
“VAR should not have intervened, and the goal should not have been disallowed.”
