Swansea City manager Alan Sheehan has admitted his team were outplayed during their heavy 4-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town yesterday.
Two own goals by former Town defender Cameron Burgess, alongside strikes from Jack Clarke and Ivan Azon, plus a brilliant save from Christian Walton, secured Ipswich a second consecutive 4-1 away victory.
“The first half was extremely disappointing; we were well below our usual standards,” Sheehan said.
“We lost possession too often, looked anxious, and failed to win our duels. We were second best in every aspect.
“Giving the ball away so frequently is unacceptable against a team of this calibre. We made a couple of adjustments at half-time and aimed to be more aggressive in key areas, which led to a well-worked goal.
But then we turned the ball over again and even hit the post. The first half performance, in particular, was not good enough, and you can’t expect to get anything from a game when you play like that.”
Acknowledging the frustration among fans, Sheehan added:
“I understand the disappointment everyone is feeling.
We all watched the same game. I’ve experienced tough periods in my career, and I understand the long-term process we’re trying to build, but we also know the results haven’t been what we want.”
With Swansea slipping down the Championship table as another international break approaches, Sheehan is feeling the pressure. When asked if he still considers himself the right man for the job, he replied:
“Yes, I absolutely do. Anyone at the training ground can see the culture and environment we’re trying to create.
“We haven’t had much time on the pitch with the players, especially with 12 squad members away until Thursday before the Bristol City game. We want to tweak things, evolve, and develop the players we’ve brought in, giving them enough minutes to build consistency.
“Today was disappointing, and no matter what I say, it won’t change opinions. In the first half, we simply didn’t show up, and even when we improved in the second half, giving the ball away put us back under pressure and made games unnecessarily difficult.”
