Chris Sutton Backs Rangers’ Title Hopes Under Danny Rohl

Rangers could still challenge Hearts for the William Hill Premiership title under manager Danny Rohl, according to former Celtic star Chris Sutton.

His backing of the Gers is notable, given Sutton’s frequent critiques of Rangers due to his Celtic connections.

Rohl guided Rangers to a third consecutive league win on 9 November, a 3-0 victory over Dundee at Dens Park. The win reduced the gap with Hearts to 12 points, with the Light Blues holding a game in hand.

While sporting director Kevin Thelwell may be cautious about further spending in January, Rohl is expected to request reinforcements as the winter transfer window approaches.

January Transfers Could Decide the Title

Sutton believes that the “arms race” in the January window will be pivotal in determining this season’s winner.

The ex-Celtic striker is particularly curious about how Rohl will address the centre-forward position, which remains a concern at Ibrox.

Since replacing Russell Martin, Rohl has shown tactical flexibility, adapting the team’s style of play. However, Sutton notes the German manager would welcome additional quality to strengthen the squad.

Speaking on the Record Celtic Podcast on 11 November, Sutton said:

“I’m sure Rohl is, I don’t know what he’s thinking about the centre-forward position, but he chops and changes so much, so it’ll be interesting to see how many players he brings in.”
“I still think that there’s a possibility that Rangers can win the league. They’re hanging on in there. I think it’s all about who wins the arms race in January that will win the league.”

It remains to be seen who Rangers can realistically afford, but a new signing or two in January seems likely.

Rohl Looks to Strengthen Defence

Rangers’ defensive reinforcements have had a mixed impact this season. Nasser Djiga’s loan from Wolves has underwhelmed, and the club may consider sending him back early.

Summer signings Max Aarons, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Jayden Meghoma have struggled to make a consistent impact, although Derek Cornelius has been one of the more reliable additions.

Rohl may prioritize making Cornelius’ loan move permanent, which could include an option to buy.

Preparing for potential departures of James Tavernier, Aarons, Djiga, and Meghoma next season, the defence could become a key focus in January as Rangers aim to remain competitive.
