Kieran McKenna confirms Ipswich Town injury worry with key player “in a boot”

Ipswich Town suffered a setback in their 2–0 victory over Hull City as Jens Cajuste was forced to leave the pitch due to injury.

The Tractor Boys earned an important away win on Tuesday night, continuing their charge toward the top end of the Championship.

They successfully contained a threatening Hull side, with second-half goals from Marcelino Nunez and Chuba Akpom securing the three points.

Despite the result, the evening was marred when key midfielder Cajuste was withdrawn at half-time.

Speaking to the Ipswich Star after the match, manager Kieran McKenna confirmed the Swedish international appeared to have twisted his ankle. Cajuste was seen in a protective boot following the game and will undergo further assessment over the coming days.

“He’s in a boot. He’s rolled his ankle in some way or the other. We’ll have to see how serious it is,” McKenna said.

The former Napoli man has faced more competition for a starting spot this season, but he still remains an influential presence in McKenna’s squad.

His top-level experience, including Champions League and Serie A involvement, brings composure and quality to the midfield.

Cajuste has also contributed two assists this campaign, making him a valuable asset in the second tier.

Should the injury prove serious, Ipswich would lose depth and competition in midfield at a crucial time, with a busy festive period approaching. Supporters will be waiting for updates, which are likely before or shortly after Friday’s clash with Oxford United.

Who could fill the gap in the XI?

Jack Taylor replaced Cajuste at the break and produced a strong performance, notably providing the assist for Akpom’s goal.

Having started the previous two matches while Cajuste was out, Taylor could be the leading candidate to return to the starting XI against Oxford.

Chilean playmaker Nunez has been pushed further forward to cover for the injured Sammie Szmodics, creating space in central midfield. While Akpom is capable of playing deeper, Tuesday’s successful setup makes a tactical change unlikely.
