‘It Will Not Be The Case Now’ – Philippe Clement Issues Norwich City Warning

Norwich City manager Philippe Clement has emphasised that restoring the Canaries’ fortunes will take time, though he is pleased with the strong backing he has received within the club since arriving.

The former Rangers boss was appointed at Carrow Road after the dismissal of Liam Manning, who was removed following a disastrous start to the Championship campaign.

Clement’s debut match came on Saturday against Birmingham City, where Norwich were handed a heavy 4-1 defeat by Chris Davies’ side. Jay Stansfield and Marvin Ducksch each netted twice for the Blues, leaving Norwich with only a single consolation goal.

On Tuesday evening, Norwich faced Oxford United and delivered a more energetic display. They registered 15 shots on goal, with Jovon Makama breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute, but the match ended 1-1 after Filip Krastev capitalised on a loose ball to snatch a late equaliser in stoppage time.

Clement highlighted the noticeable change in attitude and intensity across the two fixtures, pointing out that supporters recognised the progress—something he felt explained their positive reaction despite only securing a draw.

From a tactical standpoint, the Belgian believes his squad made meaningful progress within his first week in charge and noted it was clearly an improvement on the Birmingham performance. He expressed satisfaction with the support he has been shown at Carrow Road but warned that the rebuild will require patience and sustained effort.

Speaking to Canaries TV about the improved display, Clement said:
“Definitely, I think it was clear for everyone. That’s why many fans—although disappointed not to win—still reacted positively after the game. The team showed better structure and more effective attacking actions.”

Looking ahead, he added:
“We must continue working hard—there is no other option. Every moment my eyes are open, I’m focused on those things. I feel a lot of support in the building, from people who want to help and improve things. Not only the players, but the staff as well. We need to continue that journey over the next week, the next month. Rome wasn’t built in a day; it won’t be the case here.”

The draw leaves Norwich second from bottom in the Championship table, with only two victories from their 17 league fixtures so far. Fans will expect swift solutions, but with the squad hampered by injuries, Clement has urged patience, insisting that regaining form will take time.

A former Championship player has already advised Clement that he must identify the leaders within the Norwich dressing room.

Next, the Canaries face another home challenge as QPR visit Carrow Road. Clement will be hoping to secure what would incredibly be Norwich’s first win since the end of August.
