Leeds United have made a dramatic attempt to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Elland Road from Manchester City in the upcoming January transfer window.
Phillips was a key figure in the Leeds side that secured promotion from the Championship in 2019/20, becoming a fan favourite in the process.
His impressive displays earned him a place in the England squad and ultimately led to a lucrative transfer to Manchester City in 2022.
Since arriving at the Etihad, however, Phillips has found regular minutes hard to come by, fuelling constant rumours of a potential return to his boyhood club.
A new report claims Leeds have now taken formal action, lodging an enquiry to re-sign the midfielder during the winter window — but a major hurdle stands in the way.

The Daily Mirror reports that Leeds have approached City about the possibility of bringing Phillips back in January. However, the player’s £250,000-per-week salary presents a serious issue.
Leeds would require City to cover a large portion of his wages, making a move abroad seem more realistic.
The report adds: “Phillips has become disillusioned with how his career has stalled and believes a fresh opportunity in Europe could reignite him.
He turns 30 next week and recognises he should be at his peak rather than fading into obscurity. Leeds have asked about a loan deal, but only if City agree to shoulder a significant amount of his £250k-a-week salary.
“With that unlikely to happen, Phillips may have to consider proposals from several clubs across Spain, France, and Germany.”
A fresh start looks essential for Phillips
The midfielder’s switch to Manchester City was expected to elevate his career, coming just as Leeds slipped out of the Premier League the following season.
Instead, he has struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s plans, with the manager previously questioning his fitness before multiple loan spells followed.
Despite being named in City’s Premier League squad this year, Phillips has featured only briefly — just eight minutes in the EFL Cup — in yet another difficult campaign.
A romantic return to Elland Road appears improbable, but it is clear Phillips needs a new challenge to revive a career that once promised so much.
