“That’s my goal”: Leif Davis shares individual Ipswich Town ambition after contract extension

Leif Davis is a firm favourite at Ipswich Town, starring in their recent success, and he’s not done in East Anglia yet.

Ipswich Town star Leif Davis has said he wishes to captain the side one day after committing to his new contract

Ipswich Town have recovered impressively after their inconsistent start to the Championship campaign. ITFC now sit 5th after 16 games, with a game in hand on 2nd place, and remain unbeaten in six games.

Left-back Leif Davis has been excellent since he signed for Kieran Mckenna’s side in 2022. The fans at Portman Road adore the full-back, who signed a new deal until 2029 last week despite top clubs sniffing around the 25-year-old.

The former Leeds United man is far from done at Portman Road, and even if just once, he holds ambitions of captaining the Ipswich Town side in the future. As quoted by the East Anglian Daily Times, he said:

“Everyone should be a leader out on the pitch, but that’s my goal. To hopefully wear the armband one time or whenever I get the opportunity to wear the armband for this club. When you are on that pitch everyone should be a leader and do everything they can to encourage everyone on the pitch.”

The importance of Leif Davis at Ipswich Town

Davis has been vital in McKenna’s Ipswich Town side ever since he joined. The left-back got 32 assists in his first two seasons at the club as a flying full-back.

He was vital in ITFC’s back-to-back promotion campaigns with 14 assists in League One and 18 in the Championship season from left-back. It is a level of creativity few have matched, especially from a traditionally defensive role

He struggled in the Premier League, as most of the Tractor Boys’ side did, yet many top clubs were still interested in the full-back. However, now tied down to a new contract to affirm his commitment to Town, those keen will have to either wait for the door to open or cough up healthy money for his services.

The summer transfer window brought at lot of change at Ipswich Town, with the club signing an abundance of high profile names, so it will be interesting to see whether Davis is moved into that leadership group.

Dara O’Shea is the current captain and, outside of injury, he will not drop out of the starting XI. However, Davis has thrown his hat In the ring should O’Shea be sidelined for any reason.

After Ipswich Town were relegated it felt inevitable that Davis would be snapped up by a high profile club.

However, the extension of his contract until 2029 surprised many and highlights the belief Davis has in the manager and the project at Portman Road.

Nottingham Forest made a move for the creative full-back in the summer, but throughout the speculation, Davis stated his will to remain at ITFC. Should the club achieve their target of promotion this season, Davis’ new deal means he will most likely remain, but should they fail, his ambitions could change things.

Davis will be ready to play Oxford United on Friday night, where a result can lift the Tractor Boys into the top two before Saturday’s games.
