Trouble at Man City? Erling Haaland and Pep Guardiola in tense exchange after striker fires blank in Leeds win

Erling Haaland and Pep Guardiola shared a tense moment at full-time after Manchester City’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Leeds United.

Phil Foden scored both the opener and the stoppage-time winner to secure all three points for City, while Haaland had an off day, prompting Guardiola to console his dejected striker at the Etihad.

City Hold On for a Thrilling Win

City looked on course for a comfortable victory when Foden scored in the opening minute and Josko Gvardiol doubled the lead.

However, second-half strikes from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha set up a tense finale before Foden clinched the win in stoppage time.

Reflecting on the match, Foden described it as “one of the wildest games” he has played. “We had full control in the first half. They changed their system in the second half and we couldn’t get going,” he said.

“It was a frustrating half, but the manager regrouped us and we adapted. We had a few chances, and finally I found some space and scored. There’s still work to do, but we’re delighted with the result.”

The England international also stressed the importance of belief and togetherness in the title race. “The title race is never straightforward.

There are always ups and downs, and periods when you can’t seem to get going. The belief came through at the end. I was hungry to play and wanted to prove I could still score after missing a few chances against Newcastle.”

Guardiola Consoles Haaland

Despite City’s win, Haaland went three games without a goal, though he remains the Premier League’s top scorer with 14. Guardiola reassured the Norwegian striker, who is still chasing his 100th City goal.

“He will do it, probably in the next game,” Guardiola said with a smile. “We just talk about rest. Erling is a big man. It’s not just the legs, but also the head. We need him fresh. Minutes matter.”

Guardiola acknowledged the challenges City faced in the second half and praised Leeds for their improvement, while he also heaped praise on Foden for his brace.

“After Daniel Farke changed shape, with long balls to Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha running behind, it was always going to be a struggle. Phil’s quality and finishing are top class. He’s having a really good season.”

What’s Next for Man City and Haaland?

City, now second in the Premier League, will aim to build on this win when they travel to Fulham on Tuesday.

Having suffered defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the week, the Leeds victory comes at a crucial time. With Foden back in form, few would be surprised if Haaland ends his mini scoring drought in the next match.
