Daniel Farke is facing mounting pressure at Leeds United as the club prepares for a challenging run of Premier League fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool.
Former Premier League boss Gary O’Neil has emerged as a potential candidate to take over at Elland Road, with speculation intensifying ahead of Leeds’ clash with Chelsea tonight.
Reports suggest Farke’s position is in jeopardy, with only three wins in all competitions this season and four consecutive defeats going into this evening’s game.
At a time when stability is sorely needed, Farke would undoubtedly have preferred a less daunting schedule to ease supporter concerns and rebuild momentum.
Instead, within the next four days, Leeds must take on a title-contending Chelsea side and a Liverpool team eager to recover from their own dip in form.
These matches could represent Farke’s best opportunity to change the narrative and prove his worth. However, several names have already been linked to the Leeds job — including one who has been highly praised by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Ahead of Wolves’ meeting with Arsenal last year, Arteta spoke glowingly about O’Neil’s coaching ability, telling the club’s website via Leeds United News: “Unbelievable, so good.
You can tell how well they are coached, the spirit of the team, the difficulty that they create against every opponent, really good side and it will be really tough (to beat them).”
Given Arsenal’s current dominance, Arteta’s endorsement carries weight, and his comments would only strengthen O’Neil’s case if Leeds executives decide to pursue him.
O’Neil is not the only contender. Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou — both proven Premier League managers — have also been mentioned as possible replacements.
Red Bull have reportedly recommended Zsolt Löw, though no discussions have moved forward. Löw previously served as an assistant under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
For now, no decision has been finalized, and Farke still has an opportunity to salvage his position if he can pull off surprise results against Chelsea and Liverpool. Failure to do so could bring his tenure to an abrupt end.
Leeds currently sit 18th in the table, just one point clear of fellow promoted side Burnley. Sunderland’s rise into the top four has only heightened expectations of what newly promoted teams can achieve.
In the past two seasons, all three promoted clubs were relegated in their first year back in the Premier League.
There remains plenty of time for Leeds to course-correct — but whether Farke will be the one to guide that turnaround remains to be seen.
