Liverpool’s captain understands that Sunday’s win means little on its own, and facing Sunderland next could prove an even tougher challenge.
Liverpool may have begun to claw their way out of a season marked by inconsistency and disappointing results with their 2–0 victory over a struggling West Ham, but Virgil van Dijk recognises that a single good performance doesn’t change the bigger picture.
One positive result cannot undo a campaign filled with setbacks. What the team needs now is to show they are capable of building momentum—delivering quality performances and consistent results over the coming weeks.
“Whether you are in a good spell or a difficult one, the core principles stay the same: hard work and unity,” Van Dijk wrote in his pre-match notes. “If everyone gives their all and works together, success will eventually come.
“We got our reward on Sunday, but that was only one game. We know we need to build on it and show consistency.
Things haven’t been great for us recently, but Sunday’s result and performance were very welcome.”
Although recent struggles have been frustrating, supporters have continued to back the team, the manager, and the players from kick-off—something that was clear once again on Sunday.
Van Dijk noted that the atmosphere played a meaningful role in helping the squad.
Sunderland, on paper, represent a bigger challenge. The newly promoted side has exceeded expectations, sits firmly in the top half of the table, and is one point ahead of Liverpool.
But if the supporters continue to rally behind the team and the players respond, the captain hopes positive results will follow.
“I also want to say that the support at the weekend was incredible,” he added. “We know we’ve fallen short in recent weeks, but the way you’ve stuck with us is hugely important and deeply appreciated.
“We will need you again tonight as we take on a Sunderland team having a very strong season after coming up from the Championship.
We must be ready to build on our performance against West Ham, stay humble, and go again.”
