Former EFL striker–turned–pundit Sam Parkin believes Ipswich Town and Coventry City are on course to share the points when they meet at Portman Road this weekend.
Ipswich used their game in hand on Tuesday night to snatch a 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers, with Sindre Walle Egeli striking in the 94th minute. The match was a replay of the fixture controversially abandoned in September due to a waterlogged pitch.
Kieran McKenna’s side now trail the league leaders by 15 points. Coventry arrive in Suffolk on Saturday riding a five-match winning streak and looking to keep their momentum going.
The Sky Blues sit top of the Championship after 18 games, 10 points clear of Middlesbrough in second as the season nears its halfway point.
Ipswich, however, will be desperate to chip away at Coventry’s cushion as they continue their push to return to the Premier League following their relegation earlier this year.
Sam Parkin predicts Ipswich Town vs Coventry City
Parkin, who previously played for Ipswich, expects his old club to earn a draw against the high-flying leaders—though he admits Coventry would be his pick if the match were to produce a winner.
He anticipates an open, high-scoring clash between seventh and first, and feels a draw would suit Coventry more, even if it halts their winning streak.
“I fancy Ipswich for at least a point against Coventry,” Parkin told Benjamin Bloom’s YouTube channel.
“If I had to choose a winner, I’d lean towards Coventry—maybe a high-scoring one.
I can see another entertaining 2-2.
It’s probably a better point for Coventry despite their great run.
Ipswich need to start winning at home if they want to stop making their away form such a burden.”
Ipswich have collected eight points from their last five matches, while Coventry have taken the full 15.
Saturday will also mark Ipswich’s first home game in four, following an awkward stretch of three consecutive away fixtures—a run that has contributed to their recent dip in form.
Coventry don’t need the result as much—but momentum matters
Coventry’s impressive streak has given them a healthy cushion atop the table, with a 12-point gap to third-placed Millwall. That security means they don’t require a win as urgently as Ipswich, especially after two grinding recent results. However, Frank Lampard will still want to bank as many points as possible before the new year to ease pressure later in the season.
Ipswich, meanwhile, need a statement performance. Beating the leaders would send a strong message—and it isn’t unthinkable, especially given Coventry’s recent home defeat to Wrexham.
With both teams favouring attacking football, another 2-2 draw feels entirely realistic—and it would be a very respectable point for Lampard’s Sky Blues.
