After Wednesday night’s victory over Chelsea, Leeds United are chasing a second major result within four days as they prepare to face Liverpool on Saturday evening.
Daniel Farke secured a crucial 3-1 win at Elland Road—one that may have saved his job—thanks to goals from Ao Tanaka, Jaka Bijol and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with Pedro Neto pulling one back for Chelsea from the bench.
There had been reports before kick-off suggesting Farke would be dismissed if Leeds lost to Chelsea, particularly with chairman Paraag Marathe watching on from the stands. But the win has bought Farke valuable time heading into the Liverpool clash.
While he isn’t completely safe, Farke will recognise that this may be the ideal moment to face Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side have now lost nine of their last 14 matches and were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland on Wednesday.
Carragher and Neville predict a tight 2-1 Liverpool win
Michael Owen believes Leeds could take points off Liverpool if they produce a performance similar to their display against Chelsea.
However, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville still expect Liverpool to edge the match at Elland Road.
Speaking on Stick To Football—recorded prior to Wednesday’s fixtures—Carragher predicted Liverpool would go 2-0 ahead before Leeds snatch a late goal.
Neville added: “I’m covering this game. I think Liverpool will win,” before agreeing with Carragher that the scoreline would likely be 2-1.
Farke still under pressure despite Chelsea win
Marathe’s presence on Wednesday spoke volumes, but for now, the Leeds chairman will likely step back and give Farke a few matches as the manager attempts to steer Leeds back toward a point-per-game trajectory.
A defeat to Liverpool could send Leeds straight back into the relegation zone, especially if West Ham beat Manchester United earlier in the weekend.
Falling to Liverpool wouldn’t immediately cost Farke his job, but he must prove that Wednesday’s win wasn’t a one-off.
Leeds’ improvement hasn’t been limited to one match, either—their second-half showing against Manchester City was just as encouraging.
Now the challenge is maintaining that same energy and intensity against a struggling Liverpool.
