Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for Wilfried Gnonto, who came off the bench and instantly transformed the match.

After winning the penalty that sparked Leeds’ resurgence and playing a major role in the build-up to their second goal, the Italian winger left a lasting impression.

Redknapp admitted the Liverpool defence struggled to handle Gnonto’s direct running and creativity.

“I said to Stuart [Dallas] when he came on, he’s a box of tricks,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “Every time he got the ball, he scared me. You felt something was going to happen every time he touched it. He terrified the Liverpool players.

“He obviously wins the penalty – Konaté’s decision there was unbelievable – but Gnonto caused it. At 2-0 I felt Liverpool were safe, but everything changed. Credit to Leeds and to Daniel Farke for bringing on Gnonto, Aaronson, and of course Tanaka, who got the goal.”

Leeds must not sell Gnonto in January

Gnonto is among the players Leeds are believed to be open to selling in January if a suitable offer arrives. Despite not being a regular starter under Daniel Farke this season, the club sees him as someone who could command a significant fee to reinvest in the squad.

However, his impact against Liverpool served as a reminder of his value. With his pace, flair, and ability to beat defenders, Gnonto is one of the few players in the squad capable of changing a game on his own. Saturday’s performance was proof of that.

Farke now faces the challenge of involving him more consistently. Unlocking Gnonto’s potential will be crucial if Leeds are to remain a dangerous attacking force, especially on the road.
