Liverpool secured a crucial Premier League victory over Brighton on Saturday, with Hugo Ekitike’s two goals proving decisive and leaving Seagulls head coach Fabian Hurzeler frustrated by the outcome.
Ekitike continued his fine form after last week’s brace at Leeds United, finding the net once in each half to earn Arne Slot’s side all three points. While Liverpool kept a clean sheet, they were also dangerous on the break and could have extended their lead.
Despite the result, Hurzeler felt his team had done enough to take something from the game — perhaps even all three points.
“I think we deserved more, maybe even a win,” he said. “We created a lot of chances. We didn’t start well, but we responded, and then we conceded from a set piece we didn’t defend properly.
“It comes down to consistency over 90 minutes, and that’s where we fell short. There were key moments and good opportunities to score, but we didn’t take them.
“We have to take responsibility for the defeat. The game was there for us, but we didn’t make the most of it. The goals were avoidable, especially from set pieces, which are becoming increasingly important. That’s an area we must improve.”
Brighton marginally edged Liverpool on expected goals and matched them for possession across the match, adding to Hurzeler’s disappointment.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he added: “I’m disappointed with the result, but there are a lot of positives from the performance. We need to be more consistent, settle into games better and defend set pieces more effectively.
“Everyone in my team wants to score, and there are days when you create plenty of chances but the goals don’t come. Today was one of those days. We’re capable of competing with any team, which makes this result even harder to take.
“The difference comes down to consistency in every action — getting the small details right for the full 90 minutes, not just in spells.”
The defeat leaves Brighton ninth in the Premier League table, while Liverpool climb to fifth, level on points with Crystal Palace. Next weekend, the Reds travel to face Tottenham Hotspur, while the Seagulls host Sunderland.
