As the January transfer window approaches, Ipswich Town once again find themselves well placed to mount a serious push for the Championship title during the second half of the season.
With the Tractor Boys beginning to gather momentum, Kieran McKenna may feel further additions are needed to fine-tune a squad built for promotion. However, any fresh business could further complicate matters for young midfielder Cameron Humphreys.
Ipswich’s surprise 3-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday saw them slip to fifth in the Championship table. They now sit eight points behind second-placed Middlesbrough and 13 adrift of leaders Coventry City.
Despite being tipped by many as pre-season title favourites, Ipswich have endured an uneven start to the campaign. That came in spite of another busy summer of recruitment, which appeared to have strengthened McKenna’s squad once again.
While Town remain firmly in the promotion picture, they may not be quite where they would ideally want to be at this stage. For Humphreys, the situation has been particularly challenging, with opportunities in the first team proving limited.
The midfielder was left out of the matchday squad entirely against Leicester, and with game time scarce, the upcoming winter window could offer him a chance to secure a move — either on loan or permanently — to reignite his season.
Humphreys slips down the pecking order at Portman Road
A product of Ipswich’s academy, Humphreys made his senior debut during the 2021/22 campaign under McKenna. He was part of the squad that achieved back-to-back promotions from League One to the Championship, playing a notable role in the third tier before becoming more of a fringe figure at second-tier level.
After an impressive loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers last season, Humphreys returned to Portman Road hoping to force his way into the side. However, breaking into McKenna’s midfield plans has again proven difficult.
He featured briefly from the bench in Ipswich’s opening two fixtures — draws against Birmingham City and Southampton — but has since either been omitted from the squad or remained an unused substitute.
Those concerns were understandable given Ipswich’s summer recruitment. Despite the departures of Sam Morsy and Massimo Luongo, McKenna strengthened his midfield significantly.
Dutch defensive midfielder Azor Matusiwa arrived from Stade Rennais, Jens Cajuste returned on loan from Napoli, and the headline-grabbing signing of Marcelino Núñez from Norwich City followed. Along with Jack Taylor, that depth has left Humphreys firmly down the midfield hierarchy.
A return to League One could make sense
During the first half of last season, Wycombe Wanderers were among the pacesetters in League One, eventually reaching the play-offs in a campaign dominated by Birmingham City’s record-breaking title win.
Humphreys was central to Wycombe’s success. Partnering Bolton loanee Aaron Morley in midfield, he impressed throughout the season and remained influential even after Morley’s recall, Richard Kone’s injury issues and Matt Bloomfield’s departure to Luton Town.
Wycombe ultimately fell just short in the play-off semi-finals, losing 1-0 on aggregate to Charlton Athletic, but Humphreys had firmly established his reputation.
Statistically, his impact was clear. He finished second in the squad for expected assists, created more big chances than any other Wycombe player and contributed seven goals — including several standout strikes. His passing reliability also stood out, ranking among the club’s most accurate regulars.
A versatile, energetic box-to-box midfielder capable of filling in at left-back, Humphreys will have hoped to establish himself as a Championship regular by now. Instead, another short-term step back — potentially to League One — may offer the best route forward.
Whether that opportunity comes away from Portman Road or eventually leads to a breakthrough at Ipswich, a temporary move in January could be the key to unlocking the next phase of Humphreys’ career.
