Jens Berthel Askou insisted it was “impossible to miss” what he believed was a clear penalty for Motherwell during their narrow 1–0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.
The Steelmen were undone by Thelo Aasgaard’s decisive strike, which secured a much-needed home victory for Danny Rohl’s side and left Motherwell outside the top three.
However, the visitors felt hard done by after Lukas Fadinger went down in the box following a late challenge from Emmanuel Fernandez — an incident that went unpunished.
Askou admitted he was baffled by the decision, claiming it was obvious from where he stood.
“There’s something I’ll never understand — how we don’t get a penalty at the end when Lukas is clearly tripped with an open goal in front of him,” he said. “It’s unacceptable, and in a few weeks we’ll probably get an explanation for it.”
The Motherwell boss revealed he didn’t speak to the referee, but made it clear the decision was glaring. “It was clear as day, even from half a mile away where I was standing. He leaves his leg in and catches Lukas as he goes past him.”
Despite the frustration, Askou acknowledged his side must move on quickly with another major test ahead against Celtic on Tuesday.
“It’s something we can’t control, and we can’t dwell on it. We have to prepare for another big game and deliver the same level of performance.”
He also admitted Motherwell were occasionally too open defensively, which allowed Rangers to play through the middle at times.
“We knew coming here that if you play openly against top teams, you’re going to give up chances. But we trusted our defenders and goalkeeper to handle those moments, and they did.”
Askou felt his side created enough to get something from the match and praised the overall quality of the contest.
“I think we had the moments to swing the game our way. The momentum shifted several times, and for the fans, it was probably one of the best games played here this season.”
He concluded by stressing the next step for his squad.
“Now it’s about learning how to not just compete and perform well against the best, but to actually win these games.”
