West Ham’s approach to the January transfer window has made it increasingly clear where the club stands on Nuno Espírito Santo’s future.
After 19 Premier League matches, the Hammers find themselves four points from safety, with Nuno playing a significant role in the team’s alarming slide.
Statistically, his record places him among the least successful managers in the club’s history, and many expected him to have already been dismissed.
However, recent developments suggest the club hierarchy have now reached a firm conclusion.
West Ham show no desire to sack Nuno
Despite an eight-game winless run, Nuno remains in charge at the London Stadium. The fact he has survived such a poor spell strongly indicates that West Ham have no intention of removing him mid-season.
That belief has only been reinforced by transfer activity, with three signings reportedly close to completion — some of which could be confirmed within the next 48 hours:
- Pablo (Gil Vicente) – permanent
- Taty Castellanos (Lazio) – permanent
- Adama Traoré (Fulham) – loan
Clubs rarely recruit multiple players for a manager they are preparing to sack, particularly when those deals involve long-term commitments.
West Ham are set to invest more than £40 million this month, a clear sign they are backing Nuno and committing fully to a Premier League survival push.
Given that level of spending, it would be astonishing to see the club reverse course and dismiss him shortly after.
A deeper problem West Ham must address
While West Ham’s lack of goals has been a concern — they currently possess the sixth-worst attacking record in the division — the imminent arrivals of Castellanos, Pablo and Traoré should offer some improvement, although the extent remains uncertain.
The more pressing issue lies at the other end of the pitch. West Ham boast the league’s second-worst defensive record, having conceded 38 goals in 19 games. Only bottom-placed Wolves, who have shipped 40, fare worse.
Unless the Hammers also strengthen defensively, their new attacking options may have limited impact on their fight to avoid relegation. Goals alone will not be enough if the back line continues to leak at its current rate.
