West Ham ace slammed over ‘dreadful’ moment vs Wolves

West Ham look set for their worst result of the campaign after going into the break 3-0 down away at Wolves.

John Arias gave the hosts an early advantage in the fourth minute, finding space in the centre of the box after West Ham failed to pick him up.

Wolves doubled their lead from the penalty spot when Hwang Hee-chan converted following a foul by Soungoutou Magassa on Mateus Mané.

The youngster then capped a dominant first half by firing home a superb low effort just before the interval to make it 3-0.

The scoreline has only increased the pressure on Nuno Espírito Santo, who could be staring at the sack if the Hammers fail to produce a miraculous comeback. Many supporters had already seen enough long before the half-time whistle at Molineux.

While Freddie Potts has been one of West Ham’s brighter performers this season, he came in for heavy criticism after squandering a promising free-kick. With the score at 1-0 and players lined up in the box, Potts had the chance to deliver a dangerous ball, but instead blazed his effort over the crossbar.

Commentating on the World Feed, Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker was visibly frustrated by the attempt.

“Honestly, there’s no excuse for that,” Walker said. “You might try to justify it by saying he’s hit it with pace, but there’s no pace at all. It’s dreadful.”

West Ham, who are deep in a relegation scrap, find themselves three goals behind against a Wolves side that had not won a league game all season.

They have been completely outworked by Wolves’ high-energy midfield, and with Nottingham Forest losing to Aston Villa earlier in the day, this represents a huge missed opportunity to close the gap on the teams above them.

The contest already appears beyond West Ham, and they face a monumental task to get themselves back into the game.

Despite enjoying spells of possession, Magassa’s speculative strike late in the half was their only effort on target.

Defensively, the Hammers have been disorganised, but they must take risks going forward if they are to salvage any pride. New signing Pablo remains on the bench and could be introduced as Nuno searches for goals.

Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville have struggled to influence proceedings out wide, while the midfield has been largely anonymous.

However, if Pablo is given an opportunity and West Ham adopt a more direct approach, there is still a chance they could unsettle a Wolves defence that has shown vulnerability this season.
