Youssef Chermiti fires out Rangers title cry after double stuns Celtic

Youssef Chermiti insists Rangers’ Old Firm derby victory on Sunday underlined their credentials as genuine title contenders.

The Portuguese forward, who has endured a difficult campaign and often embodied the Light Blues’ early-season struggles, struck twice as Danny Rohl’s side came from behind to claim an impressive 3-1 win.

That result hauled Rangers level on points with Celtic, a remarkable turnaround considering they were eight points adrift of the reigning champions – and 13 behind Hearts – when Rohl took charge in October. For Chermiti, the win simply reflected the progress being made.

“We didn’t start the season the way we wanted, but we’re improving now,” said the £8 million summer signing from Everton. “We’ve been playing well and if we continue like this, we have to believe we can win the league.

“The reason is the quality in this squad and what we’re capable of doing on the pitch.”

The double took Chermiti’s goal tally for the season to four, having managed just two strikes in his previous 21 appearances, and the 21-year-old made it clear he is eager to build momentum.

“I’m feeling really good,” he added. “We got the three points and scoring against your biggest rivals in a derby is always special – especially when it’s the first time you’ve done it.

“Now I want more. I’ve always been hungry in football and I always want to score goals. My focus is to keep pushing forward.

“Playing for Rangers comes with pressure, but I love that. I enjoy playing for a big club.”

Chermiti also addressed the criticism he faced earlier in the season, admitting he understood the demands that come with representing Rangers.

“It’s normal at a big club,” he said. “The fans want the best. Sometimes they give you love, sometimes they give you hate – that’s football. I understand it and I accept it.

“I’m getting more confident now and more involved in the team. I hadn’t played regularly for two years, so I’m getting fitter and I know I can give more.

“Confidence is everything. When a player has confidence, he can really express himself.”

The striker was also keen to credit manager Danny Rohl for his support.

“He’s been very good for me,” Chermiti said. “He helps me every day, protects me, corrects me and teaches me a lot. He’s played a big part in helping me improve.”
