Medical underway in Glasgow for Rangers, Danny Rohl to seal his first signing as add-ons fully agreed

Rangers have finally sprung into life in the January transfer window after a slow start to the month.

While Danny Rohl has sparked a dramatic upturn in form since taking charge, the German coach is well aware that his squad still needs strengthening following what proved to be a disastrous summer recruitment period under Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell.

Although the Gers have forced their way back into the Scottish Premiership title conversation, there remain clear weaknesses within the squad that must be addressed before the window shuts on 2 February. Defensive reinforcements appear to be at the top of Rohl’s priority list.

Tuur Rommens set for Rangers switch

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Tuur Rommens from Belgian side KVC Westerlo.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on X that the 22-year-old is already in Glasgow and underwent a medical on Thursday evening ahead of a permanent move to Ibrox.

Rommens has featured 15 times for Westerlo in the Jupiler Pro League this season and is expected to provide Rohl with a natural left-back option.

The deal is believed to be worth an initial £2.6 million, with a further £430,000 potentially due in performance-related add-ons.

The former Genk defender is understood to be signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with Rangers.

At present, Jayden Meghoma — on loan from Brentford — is the club’s only specialist left-back, with Derek Cornelius, Max Aarons and Dujon Sterling capable of covering the position but not in their preferred roles.

Rohl’s left-back demand

Rohl has already acknowledged his desire to add a new left-back during this transfer window.

Speaking on 2 January, he said he was content with his current full-back options, but admitted that “it would be nice to have another left-footed player at left-back”.

Rommens fits that profile perfectly, being a natural left-footer.

The Belgian previously played down talk of a move, saying: “I don’t know anything about any transfer to Rangers. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Now, however, it appears the switch to Scotland is all but complete — and Rohl’s first January transfer target is set to arrive at Ibrox.
