Daniel Farke confirms Leeds star will be axed vs Derby as he publicly calls him out

Daniel Farke is expected to leave Lucas Perri out of the Leeds United starting XI for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Derby County.

Leeds travel to Pride Park on 11 January, with the Whites eager to build on their recent improvement in form and make a serious run in the competition.

However, confidence took a hit earlier this week when Leeds suffered a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League on 7 January, surrendering a lead on three separate occasions.

Following that loss, Farke openly criticised Perri’s display at St James’ Park, and it appears the German coach has grown increasingly frustrated with the goalkeeper’s recent performances.

Karl Darlow to start against Derby

Farke has confirmed that Karl Darlow will start in goal against Derby, replacing Perri. BBC Sport journalist Adam Pope relayed comments from the Leeds boss after his pre-match press conference on 8 January, during which Perri was again placed under scrutiny.

When questioned about the 28-year-old’s form, Farke insisted the Brazilian must raise his level. While the head coach acknowledged that Perri is still adjusting to the demands of the Premier League, supporters in LS11 expect far more consistency.

Darlow now has the chance to stake his claim, having previously stepped into the starting role towards the end of last season when Illan Meslier was dropped following a series of costly errors.

Goalkeeping changes could follow

Although Farke has stated that Meslier remains part of his plans, the Frenchman currently finds himself third choice, and his potential departure could create space for reinforcements.

Offloading the 25-year-old may allow Leeds to strengthen their goalkeeping options, especially if Farke’s confidence in Perri has waned. Given Darlow’s own shortcomings during his spells in the side, signing a new goalkeeper in January could be a logical move.

With Leeds locked in a relegation battle, they cannot afford further mistakes. Any continued errors from Perri could prove damaging as the season progresses.
