Just In; Sunderland confirms senior player exit after club succeed on second time of asking

Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete has completed a permanent transfer to Milton Keynes Dons, bringing his four-year spell at the Stadium of Light to a close.

The 24-year-old made 25 appearances for the Black Cats, including 14 during their promotion-winning 2021/22 campaign. However, Matete has not featured for Sunderland since December 2022.

Now, he will look to revive his career in League Two after joining MK Dons for an undisclosed fee.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman explained the decision, saying the club felt it was the right time for Matete to move on and secure regular football.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Jay at a club with clear ambition and a strong chance of promotion,” Speakman said. “We wish him every success in this next chapter.”

Matete expressed his excitement about the move, highlighting the project at MK Dons and his desire to play a key role in the club’s progress up the leagues.

MK Dons head coach Paul Warne revealed the club had previously attempted to sign the midfielder in the summer and outlined what Matete will bring to the squad.

“He’s a versatile midfielder, but I see his strongest role as a number six,” Warne said. “We’ve needed more physicality and bite in the middle at times. Jay can break up play, drive the team forward, get from box to box, and chip in with goals.

“He’s a strong athlete and adds a different dynamic to our midfield. I’m really pleased to have him on board.”
