Man United given blunt verdict on appointing Oliver Glasner as new manager

Manchester United are on the hunt for a new permanent manager, with Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner among the names under consideration.

However, questions have been raised over whether the Austrian is the right fit for a role of such magnitude.

The search began earlier this month after Ruben Amorim was dismissed, prompting Michael Carrick to step in as interim boss and make a promising early impression.

Despite Carrick’s start, Glasner has been tipped as a potential long-term successor, especially after confirming last week that he intends to leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Glasner’s future has come under further scrutiny following Palace’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Sunderland on Saturday. After the match, he publicly criticised the club’s decision to sell captain Marc Guéhi to Manchester City just before the fixture.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has since urged caution over a possible appointment, questioning whether Glasner’s success at Palace could translate to Old Trafford.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster suggested the United job may be “too big” and warned that Glasner’s strict adherence to his preferred system could lead to the same issues Amorim faced.

“He’s the favourite to get the Man United job, but I just don’t see it working,” Foster said. “It’s a massive role. He would try to use the same formation he plays at Palace, but United don’t have the players for it. Palace rely heavily on wing-backs, and that just wouldn’t suit United.”

Foster also pointed out that United operated in a more traditional 4-4-2 setup at the weekend, contrasting sharply with Glasner’s tactical approach at Selhurst Park.

Meanwhile, Glasner did not hold back in his criticism of Palace’s hierarchy, expressing frustration at losing key players on the eve of important matches.

He admitted the timing of Guéhi’s departure had left him deeply upset, describing it as having the “heart ripped out” of the team, echoing similar feelings he experienced when Eberechi Eze was nearly sold last summer.

Despite confirming his intention to step down at the end of the season, Glasner insisted he remains fully committed to his players.

When asked if he could leave before the campaign ends, he said he would not abandon the squad, praising their character and unity while hinting that more backing from the club would help.

Reports suggest his explosive post-match remarks led Palace executives to briefly consider sacking him. However, following internal talks on Sunday, the club ultimately decided to keep Glasner in charge for now.
