Guehi Replacement: Crystal Palace Eyeing Move for ‘Extremely Strong’ Defender

Crystal Palace are reportedly weighing up a move for Fenerbahce defender Jayden Oosterwolde as they look to strengthen their back line following Marc Guehi’s transfer to Manchester City.

Guehi completed his switch to Pep Guardiola’s side on Monday in a deal worth an initial £20million, leaving Palace boss Oliver Glasner with limited options at centre-back.

In response, Oosterwolde has emerged as a leading target to fill the void left by the departing captain.

The 24-year-old, a natural left-footer, is seen as a suitable replacement on the left side of Glasner’s back three. Palace are said to have intensified their interest in recent days, although formal talks between the two clubs are yet to begin.

Competition for Oosterwolde’s Signature

According to reports, Palace may face stiff competition for Oosterwolde, with Nottingham Forest and Leeds United also monitoring the Dutch defender.

Roma have been tracking him since the start of the transfer window, but Palace are now seriously considering entering the race for the highly rated centre-back.

Oosterwolde joined Fenerbahce from Parma in January 2023 and has since become a key figure for the Turkish giants. He has made 90 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals, and has featured both at left-back and centre-back.

A product of FC Twente’s academy, Oosterwolde made his senior debut in September 2020 at just 19 years old. During his time in Turkey, he has added silverware to his résumé, winning the 2022/23 Turkish Cup and the Super Cup earlier this month after a 2-0 victory over rivals Galatasaray.

Palace Stand by Glasner

Despite recent tensions, Crystal Palace have opted against dismissing Glasner following his outspoken criticism of the club after Guehi’s sale.

The Austrian accused Palace of “completely abandoning” the team, but chairman Steve Parish is said to have resisted making a knee-jerk decision.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs reportedly informed Glasner on Sunday that he will remain in charge until his contract expires. Glasner has already confirmed he will step down at the end of the season, bringing his two-and-a-half-year spell at Selhurst Park to a close.

In terms of transfers, Palace have so far signed winger Brennan Johnson this month, while Romain Esse has joined Coventry City on loan.
