Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing Manchester City youngster Stephen Mfuni to Hillsborough on loan, according to The Star.
The highly rated 17-year-old defender is comfortable operating either at centre-back or left-back and has already represented England at several youth levels. Most recently, he has been involved with the Young Lions’ Under-19 side, underlining his rapid development.
Manchester City are understood to be open to sending the teenager out on loan to gain valuable senior experience, and Wednesday are believed to be among the clubs keen to secure his services.
The Owls already have a recent connection with the Premier League champions, having welcomed Jaden Heskey to the club earlier this month.
There is also a belief that Sheffield Wednesday’s recent track record with young loanees could work in their favour.
The progress made by Harry Amass during his time at S6 has reportedly left a positive impression, while several top-flight clubs are said to be comfortable with their prospects working under head coach Henrik Pedersen.
In addition, the presence of Craig Mudd, a former Manchester City coach, could further strengthen Wednesday’s case.
Mfuni is held in high regard at the Etihad. He has previously been labelled “incredible” by City’s Under-18s head coach Oliver Reiss, and Pep Guardiola has already demonstrated his faith in the defender by handing him his senior debut earlier this month.
Reiss has praised Mfuni’s attitude and focus, highlighting his willingness to learn, adapt, and consistently apply himself in training.
However, any move to Hillsborough would not be straightforward. Sheffield Wednesday remain subject to strict restrictions on new signings due to their current administrative situation, meaning any incoming transfer must be approved by the English Football League before being completed.
The Owls are in the market for a left-sided defender following Harry Amass’ return to Manchester United and subsequent loan move to Norwich City.
Even so, their limited financial flexibility — particularly their inability to contribute significantly to player wages — could hinder their chances.
With only a few days remaining before the English transfer window shuts, there is still a possibility that Mfuni could head out on loan to a Championship club before Monday’s deadline.
That said, a move to Sheffield Wednesday appears far from certain and would likely represent a late and challenging deal to pull off.
