A new name has surfaced in Manchester City’s search for a right-back, with Hugo Viana pushing ahead with transfer plans under Pep Guardiola.

The Premier League champions have now made an approach to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, as they look to fill the void left by Kyle Walker, who recently joined Burnley.

Dumfries isn’t the only right-back linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium this summer. His emergence comes just days after a report from Gianluca Di Marzio suggested Wesley, the promising Brazilian defender from Flamengo, could be heading to Everton—a development that could interest Toffees fans.

Wesley to Everton gaining momentum?

Earlier this week, Everton were reportedly working on a £26 million deal to sign Wesley, even though the player had previously met with Manchester City and indicated he wanted to join the Premier League champions. That made Everton’s pursuit seem optimistic at best.

However, with City now shifting their focus to Dumfries, it appears Hugo Viana may be moving away from Wesley, which could clear the way for Everton to land the 21-year-old without further competition from the Etihad side.

Dumfries could be a cut-price coup

According to Football Transfers, Dumfries has become a top target for Manchester City, and he could be available at a bargain price. The Dutch international reportedly has a release clause of €25m (£21.6m) active until July 15th – a figure lower than Wesley’s valuation, despite Dumfries being far more experienced.

The 28-year-old has made a significant impact at Inter Milan and for the Netherlands, racking up 11 goals and 6 assists in 47 appearances last season, and 10 goals in 65 caps for his country. While Guardiola is known to prefer younger players he can develop, the opportunity to bring in Dumfries for just over £20 million may be too good to ignore—especially given City’s limited depth at right-back.

As the summer transfer window heats up, Manchester City appear to be leaning towards a proven performer in Dumfries, which could, in turn, allow Everton a free path to secure Wesley.
